Abstract Data

The project involves a collaborative effort between two companies and a research organization that have responded to the "Intelligent Factory" Call for Proposals under Axis I Action 1.1.3. This initiative is co-funded by ERDF funds from the National Operational Programme "Enterprise and Competitiveness" 2014-2020. The primary objective is to conduct Research and Development activities aimed at developing a suite of open-source tools and automated equipment to enhance production processes and verify the integrity of large telescope structures. These innovations will undergo validation in a real-world setting. The project beneficiaries include S.R.S. Engineering Design Srl, Lead Tech Srl, and the National Institute of Astrophysics of Catania.

Abstract Data

Objective
The project's ultimate goal is to develop a new class of aircraft interiors for the commercial aviation market, following a new design approach called "Eco-Friendly Design." The interiors are designed and manufactured using an innovative cradle-to-cradle approach, as opposed to the cradle-to-grave approach. Following this new approach, the interiors are designed to never reach the end of their life cycle: when they reach the end of their useful life, they return to their starting point, and every resource used in the final product can be reused or become part of another production process and begin a new life cycle.

Expected Results
The new approach will be applied to two of the product categories: passenger seats (economy class) and structural panels in sandwich architecture (floor panels), with the aim of developing new, low-impact and cost-effective solutions.

Results Achieved
The project's final results are in line with the objectives outlined in the approved Development Plan. Specifically, important milestones were achieved:
the development of lightweight components made from recycled composite materials for aircraft seating applications, including seat backs and tray tables;
verification of the components' compliance with flame retardancy requirements and mechanical performance once integrated into the seat system;
the reduction in overall costs of new products, achieved thanks to the submission of an application for virgin prepreg material and the simultaneous increase in the functionalized reuse of production waste.
